OVERVIEW, MISSION and EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

In 1994, this school became one of the first to introduce integrated courses in Japan, in accordance with the policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for promoting reformation of high school education. We are still one of the pioneer integrated high schools in Japan. We research and develop integrated courses in high school which are based on career education. Furthermore, this school has been selected as a Super-Global School to nurture a global outlook in students.

Academic Support System

I think the Library at UTSS in Sakado contributes greatly to the academic support system of the school as both teachers and students are able to use it as a reliable source of information. Also, the access to the web is very much available in every classroom (excluding the access to social media sites like facebook or the line app) which allows the students to have other sources which are not available in the library.

Teaching System

Usually, the students come to school at 8:30 in the morning, but classes starts at 8:40 am and ends at 3:15 pm. The 10 minutes is allotted for teacher's meeting every morning which allows the teachers to have some announcements as well as share other necessary information.

Normally they do not have classes on Saturday, except for special reasons. Teachers usually give lessons after an activity or video presentation with the teacher getting the insights of students before giving the actual lecture.

Materials and Learning Sources

Aside from the library and the computers provided by the school, they also have modern projectors and screens, Television and speakers present at every classroom. These materials are a great help for a more comfortable and easier way of teaching.

Measurement and Evaluation

There are variety of subjects in UTSS. Some teachers offer formative assessments (end-term test) and short essays by using some newspaper articles. Other subjects, like the agriculture class assesses students quite differently from the usual. Performance activity, seat work and reflection papers are also used for evaluation which can be submitted using online websites or classrooms.

Curriculum

UTSS uses the MEXT curriculum wherein, “Education is an endeavor that aims to fully develop the personality of each and every child, and is essential for children to lead happy lives in the future. In addition, education has the mission of cultivating the children who will be the future leaders of Japan and society, and the importance of such education remains a constant that will remain unchanged across eras. Further, with factors such as intensifying competition from overseas, as society continues to change at a rapid pace, the education of children is becoming increasingly important.”

Also, the school is permitted to use the IB DP curriculum.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum sets out the requirements for study of the DP.

The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups.

Made up of the three required components, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

The three core elements are:

Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.

The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.

Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
